چکیده

Classifying novel terrain or objects from sparse, complex data may require the resolution of conflicting information from sensors working at different times, locations, and scales, and from sources with different goals and situations. Information fusion methods can help resolve inconsistencies, as when evidence variously suggests that an object’s class is car, truck, or airplane. The methods described here consider a complementary problem, supposing that information from sensors and experts is reliable though inconsistent, as when evidence suggests that an object’s class is car, vehicle, and manmade. Underlying relationships among objects are assumed to be unknown to the automated system or the human user. The ARTMAP information fusion system uses distributed code representations that exploit the neural network’s capacity for one-to-many learning in order to produce self-organizing expert systems that discover hierarchical knowledge structures. The system infers multi-level relationships among groups of output classes, without any supervised labeling of these relationships.

Distributed Prediction and Hierarchical Knowledge Discovery by ARTMAP Neural Networks

Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) neural networks model real-time prediction, search, learning, and recognition. ART networks function both as models of human cognitive information processing [1,2,3] and as neural systems for technology transfer [4]. A neural computation central to both the scientific and the technological analyses is the ART matching rule [5], which models the interaction betwee...

Natural Scene Segmentation Based on Information Fusion and Hierarchical Self-organizing Maps Iv Abstract Natural Scene Segmentation Based on Information Fusion and Hierarchical Self-organizing Maps

2005 iii This thesis is dedicated to my parents, for having faith in me. Their love, support and encouragement, even from across the world, has been a never-ending source of inspiration. This thesis focuses on an intuitive approach to natural scene segmentation. This research uses color and texture features in cooperation to provide comprehensive knowledge about every pixel in the image. A nove...

Algorithms for hierarchical clustering: an overview

We survey agglomerative hierarchical clustering algorithms and discuss efficient implementations that are available in R and other software environments. We look at hierarchical self-organizing maps, and mixture models. We review grid-based clustering, focusing on hierarchical density-based approaches. Finally, we describe a recently developed very efficient (linear time) hierarchical clusterin...

Natural Scene Segmentation Based on Information Fusion and Homogeneity Property

This paper presents a novel approach to natural scene segmentation. It uses both color and texture features in cooperation to provide comprehensive knowledge about every pixel in the image. A novel scheme for the collection of training samples, based on homogeneity, is proposed. Natural scene segmentation is carried out using a two-stage hierarchical self-organizing map (HSOM). The proposed met...
